For the last couple of years, most conferences were held online but we now see the return of in-person events.
The 59th Annual Meeting of Japanese Society of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery (JSPCCS) was held from July 6-8, 2023 at Pacifico Yokohama North, Kanagawa, Japan. Furthermore, leading pediatric cardiac surgeons from Asia were also in attendance as this year featured a joint event with the 3rd Annual Meeting of the Asian Association for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery (AAPCHS).
The theme of this year’s meeting was “Perpetual Harmony behind the Smile” – highlighting the importance of collaborative effort between healthcare professionals in providing quality comprehensive care to pediatric patients from birth to adulthood.
Over 1800 healthcare professionals participated as recent trends in the pediatric cardiovascular field such as device therapy, fetal diagnosis, gene-based medicine, and improved procedural techniques were shared and discussed.
Highlights included imaging advancements, with virtual or printed simulations, which facilitate smoother surgical planning and therapeutic strategy for complicated anatomic presentations. Increased utility of fetal diagnosis allowing for improved peri- and postnatal interventions. There were also several lectures on innovations in pediatric cardiac interventional therapies.
Invited speakers from overseas also shared their strategies with pediatric care. Surgical and interventional strategies vary across different institutions as devices such as conduits, grafts and valves are not equally available in all regions.
To further improve clinical outcomes for pediatric patients, the need for strengthened cooperation between medical and surgical specialties as well as formation of shared databases for patient follow-up were encouraged during the meeting.
