During surgery, doctors use various medical instruments to dissect or cut away tissue and blood vessels. Operating room nurses, like myself, hand over these instruments during critical points for the operation to proceed smoothly.
However, there are times when directly handing over the tools is difficult so OR nurses also have to efficiently prepare and lay out the tools such that the doctor can quickly access it.
By storing frequently used tools like forceps, scissors, and retractors inside the disposable forceps pocket, time lag is reduced and the operation can be carried out smoothly.
In addition, since the pockets are transparent, we can see what are in the pockets at a single glance. This makes it very useful during surgical counting. We use the forceps pocket in cardiovascular surgery in our facility but I believe this can be used for other specialties such as thoracic surgery.
Frequently used devices can be kept inside the pockets and placed within easy reach of the surgeon. Since the pockets are transparent, it is easy to identify each tool, allowing the surgeon to quickly switch devices as needed
